A while back an old CD-R disintegrated inside my iMac, with the metallic-coated layer peeling off and getting shredded. Not quite as violent, and I luckily managed to tweezer enough out to get the drive working (don't fancy my chances of dismantling the whole machine without SOMETHING getting scratched/broken/dislodged). Ouch!
